Area of Interaction
  • Environments.
    The students will use the theme of environmental disaster to base their summative work on as well as a research stimulus.
Aims
  • Students will be exposed to all formats of communication using the English language and determining the different aspects of these such as tone, structure and modeling their writing based on examples given in class.

Content

This is a very interactive unit whereby students will access current issues in the media and analyze and respond to the main theme of environmental concerns and disasters.
They will also be writing ¨real life¨ language applications such as writing letters, e-mails, formal and informal memos/letters, designing advertisements for a product of their choice and design, identifying different formats of writing and the bias they express.
Students will be focusing on critical analysis of the media they see and encounter every day.

Summative task

The main assessment piece is the students will individually create a front page of a newspaper It is reporting on a current environmental issue or current international crisis that relates to the environment. They are to include the following aspects in their newspaper page:

  • A factual piece of information.
  • An opinionated/bias perspective on the same topic, similar to an editorial.
